Lute Olson (1934-2020): A transcendental figure in Iowa sports history

The late 1970s into the early 1980s was a whirlwind for Iowa Hawkeye athletics. Iowa Wrestling was in the midst of becoming one of the greatest sports dynasties of the 20th century, Hayden Fry had begun raising Iowa football from the ashes of irrelevancy, and a spunky, young coach from Long Beach State had just taken over Iowa men’s basketball. Hawkeye Women Prove to be Elite

Last night the Hawkeyes Women’s basketball team defeated the Colorado Bison at Carver-Hawkeye Arena 80-62 to advance to the Elite Eight in the WNIT bracket. The Hawkeyes benefitted from 49% shooting from the floor and 36% from deep. The big contributors for the Hawkeyes were Senior guard Ally Disterhoft and Sophomore center Megan Gustafson. Disterhoft had 15 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals while Gustafson had 12 points and 8 rebounds. The Iowa men’s and women’s basketball teams will make their first public appearance of the season on Oct. 19 in the Black and Gold Blowout, which will take place in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The event begins at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7 p.m. More details on the season-opening appearance were released Wednesday by the UI Athletics Department. The Black and Gold Blowout — which will include full team introductions — will showcase scrimmages by both teams at some point during the night.
