Label Lookout, a semi-regular series at KRUI highlighting a few exciting contemporary record labels and what they have to offer. Here we feature six of the station’s favorite labels in this Spring ’24 Edition.

Faith, evidently, is something that Iowa does not have in kicker Mike Meyer. Meyer is 0-for-1 on 50+ FGs this season, but that was into the wind against Michigan State. Iowa found themselves twice around the 34-yard line and elected to hurry up punt it at the end of the first quarter, the second Iowa went for it on fourth and one and ended up stuffed at the line. Getting stuffed at the line arguably was the turning point of the game. It led to a Wisconsin punt that pinned Iowa at the one-yard line. From there, a Jake Rudock … Continued

Junior Samantha Logic and senior Theairra Taylor have been named captains for the 2013-2014 season for the Iowa women’s basketball team. Both are returning starters and both started all 34 games last year. “Theairra and Samantha are exceptional leaders and will serve as terrific role models for our young players.” Lisa Bluder said in a press release from Iowa Athletics. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as Taylor is the lone senior on a team with seven underclassmen. Taylor has come back from three ACL tears and is in her fifth season with the Hawkeyes. She was voted … Continued

Standing out form the Michigan State game was a play after a missed Sean Draper tackle that led to a continuation of the drive and a big play touchdown by Michigan State. The play is relatively easy to breakdown, and while in Nickel, Iowa decides to bring the house. They send seven players to rush the quarterback and to create pressure, but with some good blocking and a nice route combo Michigan State is able to bring it in for a touchdown. From this combo, with Iowa bringing seven, Michigan State runs a combo that creates a natural pick on … Continued

Iowa’s fate seemed to be sealed after a 25 yard rush from punter Mike Sadler on a fake punt to open the fourth quarter. At that point the Hawkeyes were down 20-14 and any momentum was sucked out of Kinnick Stadium. The play was reminiscent of the fake punt run by Northern Illinois earlier in the season that ended in another loss for the Hawkeyes. According to @hawkeyegamefilm, that fake punt continues now a streak of six straight fake punts succeeding against the Hawkeyes. “I just wanted our players to know that they’re aggressive on the football field and sometimes … Continued

Damond Powell had a 74-yd burst for a touchdown Saturday on a beautiful play where just about everything went right for the Hawkeyes. It started with the coverage that the Gophers gave the Hawkeyes. It looks here like Man across the board to me.  According to Ferentz after the game, it was a tunnel screen as Iowa is going to line up with two receivers on both sides and a tight end in a stand up position.  The top side set of wideouts are just going to run the two corners out of coverage and draw the safety that you … Continued

MINNEAPOLIS—Iowa brought in Greg Davis to bring an exciting, up-tempo pace to the Iowa offense, but today in a 23-7 victory, the Kirk Ferentz style of play crept in and took center stage. “We couldn’t move Iowa…They handled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball better than we did.” Minnesota Head Coach Jerry Kill said. Ferentz ball isn’t as exciting as what we saw against Northern Illinois and Missouri State, it doesn’t score as many points, but it wins games. Iowa dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball by outpacing Minnesota 246 to … Continued

Everything seemed to be on the upswing for the Iowa Hawkeyes after the first half, but they ended up with a zero in the win column after a Week 1 30-27 loss to Northern Illinois. It was their first loss in an opener in 12 seasons. With 1:24 remaining in the fourth quarter Jake Rudock took a gamble and was punished by an interception that led to the game winning field goal. “A lot of teams will come up a little bit on third and one and it was one of those and it was called to take a shot.” … Continued

The Iowa secondary had some real struggles this past season.  These struggles either lost close games with Central Michigan, or allowed Michigan to pile on the points. According to B.J. Lowery though, they’re doing laps around where they were one year ago. “We (the secondary) improved our game speed, we’re playing way faster than we did last year.” Lowery said while addressing the media Tuesday. One big part that the secondary will be missing this year is Micah Hyde, who has his dreams set on the NFL and will leave open not only a corner spot, but one of the … Continued
