Douglas: Garza’s return spells historic upcoming season for Iowa

Iowa athletics hasn’t seen a decision of this magnitude in 35 years. Not since the winter of 1985 to be exact when star quarterback Chuck Long announced he would return to Iowa to help the Hawkeyes get a shot at a national championship and a Heisman Trophy. Instead of the gridiron, this decision came on the hardwood, and the subject of the decision was Luka Garza. His decision? It’s time to ramp up for the winter of 2020-21 as the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year. The consensus 1st-team All-American is returning to Iowa City for his senior season. … Continued

The Best Releases of July – Music Staff Picks

Written contributions from Jaden Amjadi, Sydney Sjobakken, and Derek Tate Illuminati Hotties – Free I.H: This is not the One You’ve Been Waiting For Everything about the presentation of this new record from Illuminati Hotties–from its status as a mixtape to its name–implies it is meant to be taken more as an interim before their real sophomore album. And yet, this may go down as one of the most memorable punk records of the year. Core member Sarah Tudzin takes the foundation of power-pop and plays with its boundaries with songs that are still fun and immediate. The opener, “will … Continued

Free Duke

28-year-old Tremayne “Duke” Clemons has been falsely accused of a shooting in Coralville, and eight months later is still in jail. He has not been able to post bail or bond even thought he has already been proven innocent. Police raided Duke’s home and took him into custody January 7. He was questioned and was able to prove that he had no connection, but was held in jail. Polices obtained an illegal urine sample, and since Duke had marijuana in his system they felt that they could keep him in custody. Duke’s trial is set for August 17, and he … Continued

Opinion: No football spells danger for student-athletes and local economies

Is there going to be a college football season at all in the 2020 calendar year due to the COVID-19 pandemic? In my short answer: yes, there absolutely should be. The time on the calendar that sports fans begin to set their sights on the upcoming college football season has been the debate that has been raging hot since the 4th of July holiday. However, we can’t deny the reality of our current situation. National cases are on the climb, over 130,000 Americans have died from the virus and the closest vaccine is likely on hold until this upcoming winter. … Continued

5 Songs to get you back into the Baseball Mood

Iowa City, IA– After a warm winter, the grass is starting to become green again. The birds are chirping outside my window, singing sweet songs of spring. April showers are bringing May flowers. I could drone on about spring cliches, but no one wants another cliche misplay. Be that as it may, the baseball regular season is finally back and fans across America (and Canada for us Jays fans) are jubilant to see the ballparks open once more. We now live in an era where the Cubs are no longer the lovable losers. An era in which the New York … Continued

Video games in the recent age have had a very small number of companies control the entire sports market. EA Sports and 2K Sports are juggernauts in their own rights. But there was once a company that made games that were simple, fun and uber-competitive: Humongous Entertainment. They made “Pajama Sam” and “Putt-Putt” as well as many other franchises. However, the one franchise HE is widely known for is their “Backyard” sports editions. Baseball, Football, Basketball. All sorts of sports full of kids that are short and from port to port. A particular game that I grew fond of over … Continued

I was wrong. And that’s okay. Tom Brady was named MVP yet again of a Super Bowl. And that’s okay. The underdog was just that, the underdog. And that’s okay. In the spectacle of sport, the one cardinal rule that overcomes all others: Win. And that is exactly what the New England Patriots did Sunday night. Atlanta, however, had a collapse unbeknown to be possible in sports. In a Golden State-Cleveland Indians fashion of doing things, The Atlanta Falcons blew the largest lead in super bowl history. What a feat of destruction. What went wrong? The answers are never quite … Continued

February 5th is a bittersweet date for football fans like myself. While we finally get the matchup of the #1 defense versus the #1 offense, we have to say goodbye to another great season of football. Greatness, of course, is the name of this historic game. The Super Bowl has consistently captivated the attention of Americans from coast to coast. Whether it was the first Super Bowl ever; Where the Green Bay Packers took home the first Lombardi trophy, or Super Bowl 49, where minds were boggled nationwide by the decision to not give Marshawn Lynch the ball on the … Continued
