Interview: Laura Bergus on Authoritarianism in Iowa

Lawyer and Iowa City city council member Laura Bergus talks about the alarming recent trend of authoritarianism in Iowa. She also elaborates on why the government is targeting trans people, and the purpose of the Back the Blue laws.

With the new college football playoff set to debut this winter, teams around the country are beginning to schedule tougher non-conference opponents to coincide with their grueling conference slates. After all, victories in conference games will get you in the discussion for one of the four vaunted spots in the new playoff bracket. Victories in the non-conference slate will gain admittance. Iowa City should hope that Gary Barta was huddled around his television set like the rest of us Saturday, watching Wisconsin battle LSU in primetime. The only way Iowa will ever get one of the four, sacred invites is through scheduling, … Continued

Alas, the party is over in Pittsburgh. The brick wall that plays goaltender for the New York Rangers halted the drive to Sidney Crosby’s second Stanley Cup Tuesday, in yet another curious playoff exit for Head Coach Dan Bylsma and company. Indeed, Henrik Lundqvist was superb for his Rangers, who magnificently clawed their way out of a 3-1 series deficit to win the decisive game 7 on the road. But, where was Crosby in all of this? Have I mentioned I love the new playoff format before? Not because it’s easy to keep track of before the playoffs (Seth, your thoughts?) but because of the rivalries that pour kerosene on the Stanley Cup Playoff fire. Yes the Bruins haven’t played the Red Wings in the playoffs since the 50s, and there isn’t much of a conflict between Columbus and Pittsburgh, but Rangers-Flyers? Kings-Sharks? Blackhawks-Blues? It’s like the NHL took a roll of Mentos and put them all into one two-liter Diet Coke. Thus far, the chirping and hitting has been exemplary and for the most part professional … Continued

Next Tuesday afternoon, Derek Jeter will emerge from the Yankees’ visiting dugout in Houston, walk towards the on-deck circle of Minute Maid Park, and await his first at-bat in his final season in Yankee pinstripes. As soon as he digs a divot in the right-handed batter’s box, extends his right hand to the umpire to indicate the continuation of his prolonged routine and then readies for the first offering, he will begin what may become the second consecutive “farewell” tour in Major League Baseball. Don’t get me wrong, Derek Jeter has accomplished just about everything a player could dream of: … Continued

Two tributes in one night. That was the tall task the people of Boston faced Sunday, when Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce took to the parquet, the first since their valiant run with the Boston Celtics. Six months have passed since the summer afternoon when the Commonwealth shipped the two future hall of famers to Brooklyn, and the clock has been ticking since for the fans to give their proper thanks. They got their chance Sunday, with two emotional video tributes—one for each player—followed by lengthy, thunderous ovations that had both players grinning. Yes their current team won the game, … Continued
