Indie rock’s favorite Portland pessimists are back with their first new music since 2009’s “No One’s First, And You’re Next” EP.

“Lampshades on Fire” has a polished sound more in line with Modest Mouse’s major-label output than the group’s earlier, more raw material. The track plays like a barreling, downhill counterpart to “The World at Large,” opening with a familiar “ba-da-da-duh-da” refrain and frontman Isaac Brock’s trademark harmonic guitar bends.

Lyrically, “Lampshades” begins as a vindictive blast at wasteful, shallow party culture – the song’s scope gradually expands to encompass humanity’s polluting and destruction of Earth. Classic Modest Mouse.

The new single arrived alongside the announcement of Modest Mouse’s 7th LP “Strangers to Ourselves,” releasing March 3rd 2015. You can purchase “Lampshades on Fire” and preorder the upcoming album on iTunes.
