The seventh annual Mission Creek Festival returns March 27-April 1, 2012. The six-day celebration takes over the venues and art spaces in downtown Iowa City, creating an easily navigated collection of music, literature, and art.

The Mission Creek Festival makes its second announcement of artists for this year’s festival. The new acts scheduled to perform include folk/roots artists William Elliottt Whitmore & Justin Townes Earle, afro-beat legend Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, ambient music mastermind Tim Hecker, comedians Jon Benjamin & Jon Glaser, and hip-hop powerhouse Black Milk. Other new acts include: Leslie & the Ly’s, Erase Errata, Mike Doughty (of Soul Coughing), Little Scream, Oberhofer, Wet Hair, Grand Tetons, Denison Witmer, Muscle Drum, and Weed Wolf.

This new announcement accentuates the festival’s growing diversity and commitment to acts from both near and far parts of the world. Iowa native Will Whitmore will play on the same show as his contemporary Justin Townes Earle; Nigerian musician Seun Kuti (son of Fela Kuti) will lead his father’s classic band Egypt 80 through new and old material (Kuti’s new album was co-produced by the renowned Brian Eno); Montreal’s Tim Hecker will perform work from his growing and impressive catalog of ambient and electronic works; Jon Benjamin and Jon Glaser will join David Cross for an evening of comedy at the Englert; Detroit-based rapper/producer Black Milk, who recently returned from a recording session with Jack White (ex-White Stripes) and also released an EP with Danny Brown, will bring his live hip-hop band to Gabe’s.

These new acts join a lineup that already includes indie-pop luminaries The Magentic Fields, comedian David Cross, and singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten. More details are in-the-works, including another round of festival acts, information on literary events and details about the festival’s new endeavors: a food program and an artists-in-residence series.

The 2012 Mission Creek Festival is supported through the generous sponsorships of West Music, the Moen Group, Catherine’s Boutique, New Pioneer Food Co-op, The Mansion, the Iowa City/Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, Hancher Auditorium, and New Belgium Brewery.
